Bikeshedding
Spending far too much time debating a small, easy-to-understand detail instead of the harder, more important decision.
What it is
Bikeshedding happens when people focus on the simplest part of a problem because it is easier to discuss than the real issue. The result is lots of discussion and little progress.
When you would use it
You use bikeshedding to point out that a discussion has drifted toward trivial details and away from the decision that actually matters.
Common operations
- Naming colors, labels, or buttons
- Debating style instead of behavior
- Losing time on low-value arguments
