Retry

What is Retry?

Another attempt at an operation after an earlier attempt failed or its outcome could not be confirmed.

Retries can recover from temporary failures. For example, retry a signup email after the mail service briefly becomes unavailable. Limit attempts and wait between them; invalid addresses need correction instead. A failed response does not prove nothing happened, so avoid repeating side effects such as charges without duplicate protection.

How it relates to Orbit

For eligible failures, a failed prompt can retry on its complexity tier's configured fallback model from a different provider; preserved work and unsupported failure types prevent automatic fallback.

When you would use it

Use it for temporary failures when repeating the operation is safe, with a stopping rule.

Common operations

  • Classify failures as temporary or permanent.
  • Limit attempts and add waiting time.
