Background job

What is Background job?

A task that runs outside the request a person is waiting for, often through a separate worker or a schedule.

A background job lets a web request finish before slower work does. For example, signup saves the account and schedules a welcome email instead of making the person wait for delivery. Record whether the job completed, and plan retries for failures. A job running in the background is not automatically durable across a restart.

When you would use it

Use it for work that can finish later, such as sending emails or producing reports.

Common operations

  • Schedule or enqueue a job.
  • Track completion and retry safe failures.
