What is Opus?
A high-capability model in the Claude family, one tier below Fable, designed to handle highly complex, cognitively demanding tasks.
Opus sits above Sonnet and below Fable in the Claude lineup, utilizing significant computational resources to excel at deep analysis, strategic planning, and complex system architecture. Because it is slower and more expensive than Sonnet, it is typically reserved for tasks where precision and deep contextual reasoning are more important than speed.

When you would use it
You reach for Opus when you are stuck on a highly difficult, multi-layered problem and need the absolute highest level of AI reasoning available, regardless of token cost.
