Service discovery

What is Service discovery?

A way for running services to find the current network address of another service.

A service is a separately running part of an app. Its network address can change when it restarts or moves. Service discovery maps a stable name to current addresses. For example, checkout asks for the payments service by name instead of keeping a particular server address in code.

When you would use it

Use it when independently running app parts move or gain and lose copies.

Common operations

  • Register available service addresses.
  • Look up a service by its stable name.
